Aliyev’s Wife Reportedly Took Government Jet to Ibiza for Holiday With Daughter

Azerbaijan’s first vice-president, Mehriban Aliyeva, reportedly spent a week on the Spanish island of Ibiza with one of her daughters after arriving aboard an Azerbaijani government aircraft. The trip raises questions about the use and cost of the plane, though neither the passengers nor the funding arrangements have been independently confirmed.

A Week on the Island

Ibiza newspaper La Voz de Ibiza reported that Aliyeva, who is also President Ilham Aliyev’s wife, stayed on the island from 9 to 15 September. According to the newspaper’s account, she was accompanied by one of her two daughters and a group of roughly 30 advisers and security personnel. It did not identify the daughter.

The outlet said the group stayed at Sabina Estates and visited restaurants on the island. It identified the aircraft as an Airbus A340-642ACJ bearing registration 4K-AI08, and reported that it remained at Ibiza airport during the visit before departing for Baku on 15 September.

The aircraft’s presence attracted separate local attention. Diario de Ibiza reported that an Azerbaijani government A340-600 had appeared at the airport. Airport operator Aena told the publication it had no information about the passengers or the reason for the trip.

Questions About the Cost

The reported leisure itinerary points to a private visit, but the publicly available accounts do not establish who paid for the flight, the aircraft’s stay at the airport, or the accompanying staff. Azerbaijani independent outlet Meydan TV noted that those costs had not been disclosed and that the original Spanish report did not explain how it verified every detail of the daughter’s activities.

The aircraft’s presence in Ibiza is supported by local reporting. The claim that Aliyeva and her daughter used it for a holiday remains attributed to La Voz de Ibiza. Whether public funds covered a private trip is an open question.
