Conservative Foundation Advocates for New Middle East Security Alliance

In a recent commentary published on May 2, 2025, titled "The Path to Greater Peace in the Middle East Is Clear," Heritage Foundation experts Victoria Coates, PhD, Vice President of the Kathryn and Shelby Cullom Davis Institute, and Robert Greenway, Director of the Allison Center for National Security, have called for the establishment of a new Middle East Security Alliance to build upon the foundation of the Abraham Accords.

Building on the Abraham Accords Success

The conservative American think tank has highlighted the transformative impact of the Abraham Accords, which were brokered by former President Trump in 2020. These historic agreements established diplomatic relations between Israel and several Arab nations, including the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Morocco, and Sudan. According to Heritage Foundation analysts, these accords have remarkably withstood significant regional challenges, including the Hamas attack of October 7, 2023, demonstrating their resilience and strategic importance to American interests.

The Proposed Security Alliance

The Heritage Foundation, long known for its advocacy of conservative policies and strong national defense, envisions this new security framework to empower regional allies to collectively defend themselves while allowing the United States to protect its interests with fewer deployed military assets. The proposed alliance would encompass multiple domains of security cooperation, including:

Air and missile defense systems integration

Space and satellite cooperation

Maritime security coordination

Enhanced intelligence sharing

Joint military exercises

Research and development partnerships

Economic and Technological Benefits

Beyond security, Heritage experts emphasize the potential for broader economic integration through initiatives like the India-Middle East-Europe Corridor (IMEC). This trade route, with its potential to significantly reduce transit times for critical goods between India and Europe by 40-50% compared to existing sea routes, while providing an alternative to trade corridors dominated by China, Russia, and Iran, offers a promising future.

The foundation also highlights promising technological partnerships, specifically pointing to recent developments such as an Israel-based AI Research Center established by Abu Dhabi's Technology Innovation Institute, and a reported $1.4 trillion Emirati investment framework in American technology sectors announced in March 2025.

Regional Challenges and American Leadership

The commentary addresses ongoing regional threats, particularly from Iran, which Heritage describes as continuing to pursue nuclear weapons capability while supporting proxy terror networks. It is crucial that we address these threats with a comprehensive approach to Middle Eastern security.

The foundation argues that a comprehensive approach to Middle Eastern security must address these challenges while developing new solutions for areas like Gaza.

A Conservative Vision for Regional Peace

The Heritage Foundation, which hosts the Abraham Accords Peace Institute, is focused on working with all U.S. and Middle East stakeholders to realize what it refers to as 'the full potential of the original accords.' This commitment is part of the organization's broader mission to promote conservative policies based on the principles of free enterprise, strong national defense, and traditional American values. Experts at the Heritage Foundation believe that this moment represents a 'once-in-a-generation opportunity' to enhance and expand peace and cooperation in the Middle East through bold strategies and courageous initiatives that bolster essential U.S. interests and alliances. This opportunity, they argue, is a result of the transformative impact of the Abraham Accords and the potential of the proposed alliance to build on this success.

Sovereignty as Spectacle: Turkish Cypriot Researcher Critiques Grand Opening of the Northern Cyprus New "Republican Campus"

On Saturday, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), which is not recognized internationally, officially launched its new "Republican Campus." The first construction phase features the new Presidential Building and Parliament Building, inaugurated during a grand ceremony attended by Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Dubbed by critics as a "show of sovereignty," the event, alongside the concurrent Teknofest technology festival, has drawn criticism from Turkish Cypriot researcher-writer Mete Hatay for its political undertones and symbolic messaging. Hatay, a noted peace researcher affiliated with the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO), argues that the openings were not merely about inaugurating buildings but about constructing symbols of dominance under the guise of sovereignty. Hatay describes the events as meticulously staged platforms for political agendas. "Today in Northern Cyprus, it wasn't just buildings that were opened; symbols w...

The report further claimed the Archbishop stated there was "no possibility of making any more concessions" in the current situation. In response, Tufan Erhürman , leader of the social democrat Republican Turkish Party (CTP), issued a strongly-worded statement criticizing what he called "discriminatory and pr...
