Israeli Press: Syrian Druze Appeal to Israel; IDF Strucks Damascus

Syria's Druze minority has appealed to Israel for protection amid growing instability following the collapse of the Assad regime, according to reports from Israel Hayom and Ynetnews. The plea coincides with a stark warning from Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi to Syria's new leadership. Israeli airstrikes were also carried out, reportedly aimed at thwarting attacks against the Druze community.

Fears have escalated within the Druze population, concentrated mainly in the southern Sweida province, regarding their safety under the emergent authority dominated by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS).

As detailed by Israel Hayom, community leaders have directly communicated their anxieties to Israeli officials, seeking intervention. Responding decisively, IDF Chief Halevi issued a public warning, signaling that harm to the Druze would not be tolerated by Israel.

Further demonstrating Israel's focus on Druzes, Ynetnews reported that the IDF conducted airstrikes near Damascus. The operation specifically targeted "regime-aligned extremists" who were reportedly preparing an imminent attack on Druze villages. The preemptive strike highlights Israel's active monitoring of the situation and its readiness to use military force to protect the minority group from perceived threats arising during Syria's transition. The problem remains volatile as regional powers closely watch post-Assad Syria developments.

Sovereignty as Spectacle: Turkish Cypriot Researcher Critiques Grand Opening of the Northern Cyprus New "Republican Campus"

On Saturday, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), which is not recognized internationally, officially launched its new "Republican Campus." The first construction phase features the new Presidential Building and Parliament Building, inaugurated during a grand ceremony attended by Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Dubbed by critics as a "show of sovereignty," the event, alongside the concurrent Teknofest technology festival, has drawn criticism from Turkish Cypriot researcher-writer Mete Hatay for its political undertones and symbolic messaging. Hatay, a noted peace researcher affiliated with the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO), argues that the openings were not merely about inaugurating buildings but about constructing symbols of dominance under the guise of sovereignty. Hatay describes the events as meticulously staged platforms for political agendas. "Today in Northern Cyprus, it wasn't just buildings that were opened; symbols w...
