The Leader of Turkey's Main Opposition Party Attacked at Istanbul

The leader of Turkey's main opposition party, the Republican People's Party (CHP), Özgür Özel, was assaulted on Sunday as he was leaving the Atatürk Cultural Center (AKM). This incident occurred during a ceremony held in honor of the late MP Sırrı Süreyya Önder, according to reports from Halk TV and other local sources. The attacker, who reportedly shouted, "I am a descendant of the Ottomans," struck Özel at close range before being removed from the scene in an ambulance and subsequently detained. Istanbul's Public Prosecutor's Office has launched an investigation into the incident.

According to Halk TV reporter Dilan Alp, the attack occurred just before the funeral vehicle departed from AKM. A man, estimated to be between 50 and 60 years old, attempted to punch Özel as he was leaving the venue. Security personnel quickly surrounded Özel, who assured them he was fine and swiftly moved to his vehicle with accompanying MPs. Witnesses reported no visible injuries on Özel, though a crowd attempted to lynch the assailant before he was taken away in an ambulance. While claims of the attacker shouting slogans surfaced, these remain unconfirmed.

Özel's health condition was reported to be stable following the incident. CHP MP Sezgin Tanrıkulu condemned the attacker, calling him "a shameless, vile provocateur" who claimed to be "an Ottoman child." Meanwhile, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya identified the suspect as S.T., stating the attack was strongly condemned, and the perpetrator was in custody, ensuring that any act disrupting public peace would face legal consequences.

Political figures across the spectrum denounced the assault. Ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) Deputy Chairman Ömer Çelik expressed solidarity on social media, stating, "We condemn the attack on CHP leader Özgür Özel and extend our well-wishes. No attack on political institutions is acceptable; the assailant will be held accountable under the law." The incident has sparked widespread outrage, highlighting tensions in Turkey's political landscape.

Sovereignty as Spectacle: Turkish Cypriot Researcher Critiques Grand Opening of the Northern Cyprus New "Republican Campus"

On Saturday, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), which is not recognized internationally, officially launched its new "Republican Campus." The first construction phase features the new Presidential Building and Parliament Building, inaugurated during a grand ceremony attended by Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Dubbed by critics as a "show of sovereignty," the event, alongside the concurrent Teknofest technology festival, has drawn criticism from Turkish Cypriot researcher-writer Mete Hatay for its political undertones and symbolic messaging. Hatay, a noted peace researcher affiliated with the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO), argues that the openings were not merely about inaugurating buildings but about constructing symbols of dominance under the guise of sovereignty. Hatay describes the events as meticulously staged platforms for political agendas. "Today in Northern Cyprus, it wasn't just buildings that were opened; symbols w...
