The Timing Matters: Syria Thwarts ISIS Assassination Plots Against Al-Sharaa Before Washington Visit

Syrian authorities have successfully foiled two separate Islamic State assassination attempts against transitional President Ahmad al-Sharaa in recent months, Reuters reported Monday, as the Syrian leader conducts a landmark visit to Washington that could see Syria formally join the international coalition against ISIS.

The disclosure of these security threats comes at a particularly significant moment, with al-Sharaa currently in the United States capital for his first official White House meeting with President Donald Trump. The timing has raised questions about whether the revelation is intended to underscore Syria's commitment to combating ISIS as Damascus seeks international legitimacy and sanctions relief.

According to Reuters, which cited two senior sources including one Syrian official and another from a regional Middle Eastern country, one assassination attempt targeted a publicly announced official event that al-Sharaa was scheduled to attend. The sources declined to provide additional details due to the sensitive nature of the security operations. Syria's Ministry of Information has not responded to requests for comment.

The assassination plots highlight the ongoing security challenges facing Syria's new leadership as it attempts to stabilize the country and gain international recognition. ISIS, though territorially defeated in Syria, continues to pose a threat through sleeper cells and targeted operations against government officials.

This is not the first time assassination concerns have surrounded al-Sharaa. In June, Syrian authorities denied reports published by Israeli newspaper Israel Hayom claiming that Syrian forces and Turkish intelligence had thwarted an ISIS plot to kill the president during his visit to Daraa in southern Syria. The alleged plot reportedly involved a senior ISIS figure with rumored connections to Hezbollah.

Al-Sharaa's current Washington visit, which began November 8, represents a watershed moment in Syrian-American relations. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that President Trump would meet al-Sharaa at the White House, noting that "we have seen good progress toward peace under Syria's new leadership."

During meetings with Syrian diaspora representatives in Washington, al-Sharaa expressed optimism about the lifting of international sanctions, describing them as being in their "final stages" and urging continued diplomatic efforts. He characterized the current moment as a "rare opportunity" that Syrians must seize.

Syria's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ibrahim Olabi, called the White House visit "unprecedented" and a "qualitative shift in the diplomatic context." This marks the third meeting between al-Sharaa and Trump, following encounters in Riyadh hosted by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in May, and during the UN General Assembly in New York in September.

The revelation of the assassination attempts while al-Sharaa is in Washington appears strategically timed to emphasize Syria's role as a partner in counterterrorism efforts. International observers suggest that Syria's formal accession to the International Coalition against ISIS could be announced during this visit, marking a significant step in the country's reintegration into the international community.
