Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray Stars Jailed Amidst Football Betting Scandal

In a shocking turn of events that has sent ripples through Turkish football, prominent players Mert Hakan Yandaş of Fenerbahçe and Metehan Baltacı of Galatasaray are among 29 individuals who have been formally arrested in connection with a widespread betting and match-fixing investigation. The arrests come after an extensive probe into alleged manipulation of game outcomes and financial misconduct within the sport.

According to a report by T24 on December 8, a total of 29 suspects, including Metehan Baltacı, Murat Sancak, Alassane Ndao, Mert Hakan Yandaş, Ahmet Okatan, Mehmet Emin Katipoğlu, and Ümit Kaya, were referred to the Duty Criminal Judgeship of Peace with a request for their arrest. While Murat Sancak faces charges of money laundering derived from criminal activities, the other suspects are primarily accused of attempting to influence match results. Additionally, judicial control measures have been requested for 10 other individuals implicated in the scandal.

The investigation escalated with early morning raids on December 5, during which 38 people were detained. Among those initially held were Galatasaray player Metehan Baltacı, Fenerbahçe captain Mert Hakan Yandaş, top-tier referee Zorbay Küçük, former Adana Demirspor Club President Murat Sancak, and former football referee and sports commentator Ahmet Çakar. The suspects were taken to the Istanbul Police Directorate on Vatan Street on December 6 for questioning. Following their statements and other procedural steps, they underwent health checks before being transferred to the courthouse. The detention order for Ahmet Çakar was lifted due to his health condition, which required hospitalization.

After the completion of their testimonies at the courthouse, the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office announced that 29 suspects, including the aforementioned players and officials, were referred for arrest, while 10 others were sent with a request for judicial control. The list of those referred for judicial control includes Abdulsamet Burak, Cengiz Demir, Erhan Çelenk, İsmail Kalburcu, Salih Malkoçoğlu, Samet Karabatak, Tolga Kalender, Uğur Kaan Yıldız, Gamze Neli Kaya, and Zorbay Küçük. The extensive list of individuals for whom arrest was requested further underscores the breadth of this ongoing probe, implicating players, former officials, and various other individuals in what appears to be a deeply rooted network of illicit activities.
