Government Issues Fierce Denials as ‘Bombshell’ Video Sparks Political Storm in Cyprus

Responses from government officials came thick and fast on Friday morning after a video alleging campaign finance lawbreaking on the part of President Nikos Christodoulides and his associates was widely shared on social media. The video, which has amassed hundreds of thousands of views overnight, features close associates of the President appearing to discuss the use of cash donations to circumvent election campaign laws and assist oligarchs in evading EU sanctions.

While the administration has dismissed the footage as a malicious attack, forensic details regarding the source have begun to emerge. According to reports from Cypriot Greek media, including Kathimerini and SigmaLive, technical analysis by Fact Check Cyprus found no obvious signs of AI manipulation or "deepfake" technology in the footage, although the context and potential editing could not be fully verified. Furthermore, security experts noted that the English text accompanying the post contained distinct Turkish keyboard characters—such as the undotted ‘ı’ and the letter ‘ş’—sparking debate over whether this indicates a foreign influence operation or a deliberate "red herring" designed to mislead regarding the leaker's identity.

Government Defense

Government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis appeared on Sigma TV early Friday, categorically denying the implications of the video. Addressing the footage where construction company Cyfield’s CEO, Giorgos Chrysochos, claims to be in regular contact with the President, Letymbiotis stated the pair are not in communication. He asserted that since Christodoulides’ election in February 2023, the only interaction was a congratulatory message sent by Chrysochos which received no response.

Letymbiotis characterized the video as “an organised effort based on falsified footage” aimed at damaging the President and the country's strategy to attract investment. He questioned the "dubious origin" of the social media account responsible for the leak, suggesting the video was edited to lead viewers to a "preconceived" conclusion that does not reflect reality.

“In no case has the president of the republic received money through third parties,” Letymbiotis said, adding that police and legal services will evaluate the material.

The Allegations

The controversial video was first posted on Thursday by a UK-based account on platform X under the name “Emily Thompson” (@EmilyTanalyst). It features Chief of Staff Charalambos Charalambous and former minister Giorgos Lakkotrypis allegedly explaining how cash donations were used to bypass financing limits. The video also claims that the ‘Social Support Body’—a fund for disadvantaged students managed by First Lady Philippa Karsera Christodoulides—is used to conceal donations in return for favours.

Presidential press office director Victor Papadopoulos rejected these claims on Politis Radio, stating, “There is nothing opaque in its operation… transparency is the be all and end all for the current government.”

Opposition Fury

The political fallout has been immediate. Akel leader Stefanos Stefanou called for the immediate dismissal of Chief of Staff Charalambous, stating that his continued presence would "insult the institution of the presidency." Stefanou argued that even if the video is part of a "hybrid war," the authenticity of the conversations recorded appears genuine.

“The president of the republic remains personally exposed,” Stefanou said, calling on the Attorney-General and anti-corruption authorities to launch a full investigation. Akel MP Irene Charalambides added a scathing critique on social media, writing, “There is neither a hybrid war, nor a Turkish thumb on the scale... It is their corruption which is to blame.”

Disy, the party from which Christodoulides was expelled in 2023, also weighed in. “Society is watching in shock,” said Disy in a statement, demanding clear answers regarding whether cash contributions were received in exchange for favours. The party emphasized that while the video may be a malicious act, the questions it raises regarding transparency and the Social Support Body are "unwavering."

The "Emily Thompson" Account

Scrutiny has turned toward the "Emily Thompson" account, which describes itself as an independent analyst focused on US politics. Analysis indicates the account was registered in 2022 but recently shifted its focus almost exclusively to Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean. Following the video's release, the account's follower count tripled overnight, and the post has been viewed more than 250,000 times.

The government maintains that the President will respond personally "when and if he deems appropriate," while asserting that their administration will leave office with "clean hands."
