The conflict between the US-Israel and Iran has escalated sharply over the past 24 hours, with intensive strikes on Tehran and Iranian infrastructure. Israel launched a "wide-scale wave of airstrikes" targeting regime infrastructure in the Iranian capital, including military and nuclear sites. Explosions in eastern Tehran were described as "unprecedented," with Iranian air defenses activated in response. US Central Command confirmed ongoing precision strikes on Iranian military targets, including a turbine engine facility in Qom linked to drone production.
Iran retaliated with missile and drone barrages across the Gulf, striking energy infrastructure in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, and the UAE. Missiles hit an Amazon Web Services data center in Abu Dhabi and impacted near Riyadh. Iranian forces warned that any attack on its energy sites would trigger regional retaliation against US-aligned infrastructure.
Trump Pauses Power Plant Strikes Amid Diplomatic Signals
President Donald Trump announced a five-day pause on planned US strikes against Iranian power plants, citing "productive conversations" with Tehran. In a Truth Social post, he stated the US and Iran are working toward a "complete and total resolution" of hostilities. However, Iran denied any direct talks, with state media calling Trump’s move a "climbdown" under pressure from Tehran’s threat to retaliate against regional energy infrastructure.
Despite the pause, Israel continued its strikes on Tehran, signaling divergent military strategies. Trump emphasized the pause is conditional, saying, “We’ll see how that goes, and if it goes well, we’re going to end up with settling this. Otherwise, we’ll just keep bombing our little hearts out.”
Mounting Civilian Toll and Infrastructure Damage
The humanitarian impact is severe, with over 1,000 civilian deaths in Iran, including more than 200 children, according to HRANA and Iranian state media. Strikes have damaged hospitals, schools, and UNESCO World Heritage sites, including Tehran’s Golestan Palace and Grand Bazaar. The Gandhi Hospital in Tehran suffered extensive damage, with its IVF department destroyed. The Israeli military claimed the nearby IRIB broadcasting complex was the intended target.
In Lebanon, Israeli operations have killed at least 1,039 people, including 118 children, while over 850,000 have been displaced. In Israel, Iranian missile strikes have killed 12, with dozens injured. The US has lost 13 military personnel since the war began.
Global Energy Crisis Deepens
The war has triggered a major global energy crisis, with Brent crude fluctuating around $110–$114 per barrel amid disruptions to the Strait of Hormuz, through which 20% of global oil passes. After Trump’s pause announcement, prices briefly dropped to $99 but remain volatile. Iran’s closure of the strait and attacks on Gulf energy facilities have severely constrained supply.
The IEA warned the crisis poses the "greatest global energy security challenge in history", worse than the 1970s oil shocks. The US released 172 million barrels from its Strategic Petroleum Reserve, while the IEA coordinated a 400 million barrel emergency release to stabilize markets.
