Yemen's Ansarullah movement, commonly known as the Houthis, has announced its readiness to participate in retaliatory operations against the United States and Israel, in a significant escalation of the regional response to the ongoing US-Israeli military campaign against Iran.
Iran's state broadcaster Press TV reported Thursday night that Ansarullah formally declared its willingness to join the broader axis of resistance in striking back against US and Israeli targets, following the recent military strikes on Iranian territory that have sent shockwaves across the Middle East and beyond.
A Consequential Declaration
The announcement carries considerable strategic weight. As the US-Israeli war against Iran enters a critical phase, the potential entry of Ansarullah into active retaliatory operations would mark a substantial widening of the conflict's front lines. Yemen's geographic position — straddling the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, one of the world's most vital maritime chokepoints — means that Ansarullah military action could directly threaten international shipping lanes, US naval assets in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, and Israeli-linked commercial traffic, as it has done during previous rounds of escalation since late 2023.
Who Are Ansarullah?
Ansarullah is a Zaydi Shia political and military movement that emerged in northwestern Yemen in the early 2000s under the leadership of Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi, from whom the group derives its popular name. Following al-Houthi's killing by Yemeni government forces in 2004, the movement continued to grow and radicalize, eventually seizing the Yemeni capital Sana'a in 2014–2015, triggering a devastating civil war and the subsequent military intervention of a Saudi-led coalition.
Backed politically and militarily by Iran, Ansarullah controls much of northern Yemen and commands a substantial arsenal of ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and armed drones. Since October 2023, the group has launched hundreds of strikes against Israeli territory and commercial shipping it deems linked to Israel, positioning itself as a frontline actor within Iran's so-called "Axis of Resistance" — a network that also includes Hezbollah in Lebanon, various Iraqi armed factions, and Palestinian groups in Gaza.
The movement's military spokesperson, Yahya Sarea, has repeatedly framed Ansarullah's operations as acts of solidarity with Gaza and Iran, and the group has demonstrated both the willingness and the capability to sustain prolonged long-range strike campaigns despite years of Saudi and US-led pressure.
Regional Implications
Ansarullah's declaration of readiness comes at a moment when regional actors are recalibrating their positions in light of the direct US-Israeli assault on Iran. Should Ansarullah translate its announcement into active operations, the Red Sea — already a zone of heightened tension since 2023 — could once again become a frontline theater, with potentially severe consequences for global energy markets, maritime trade, and US force posture in the broader Middle East.
