The Tudeh Party of Iran, the country's historic communist organisation, welcomes the announcement of a temporary ceasefire between Iran and the United States as a significant step toward lasting peace, while simultaneously issuing a firm demand for a popular and progressive government to lead the country's post-war national reconstruction.
In a formal statement, the party described the conditional two-week ceasefire — brokered through the mediation of Pakistan in the final moments before a deadline set by U.S. President Donald Trump — as "an important step for the country's future." The agreement, which requires the passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz to remain unimpeded, came after weeks of relentless bombardment of Iranian territory by U.S. and Israeli military forces.
The Tudeh Party underscored the catastrophic scale of destruction wrought by the conflict. Tens of thousands of Iranians were killed or injured, with tens of thousands of residential units destroyed alongside factories, energy infrastructure, power plants, educational institutions, desalination facilities, and dozens of protected historical sites. The party stated that recovery from this catastrophe, in the long term, depends entirely on lasting peace and what it described as "people-oriented policies aligned with the country's strategic and national interests."
Central to the party's statement is its insistence that reconstruction cannot be entrusted to the existing theocratic establishment. The Tudeh Party argued that repairing the devastation caused by the war "will only be possible through a major national effort" and that such an effort "requires the establishment of a popular and progressive government capable of scientifically and forward-looking planning to secure the country's strategic national interests." This demand — for a genuinely representative, progressive administration — stands as the party's core political message in the post-ceasefire moment.
The party also forcefully rejected the U.S. and Israeli policy of externally imposed regime change, describing the failure of efforts to install proxies such as Reza Pahlavi as significant for Iran's anti-dictatorial movement. "Regime change in Iran is a matter of the right and authority of the Iranian people, not foreign aggressors," the statement declared. The Tudeh Party insisted that while the ceasefire is to be welcomed, the fundamental demands of the popular movement — for a transition away from dictatorship and for the people to determine their own destiny toward freedom and social justice — remain firmly in place.
The party also highlighted the heroic role played by ordinary Iranians during the conflict, noting the formation of human chains on bridges and around production centers as a clear manifestation of popular patriotism. It called urgently for the release of all political prisoners — facing harsh conditions in wartime prisons — and an immediate halt to executions, linking these demands directly to the conditions necessary for genuine democratic progress. For the Tudeh Party, a true and lasting peace is inseparable from the struggle for democracy, social justice, and a government that serves the Iranian people rather than suppressing them.
