Kılıçdaroğlu’s “Cleansing” Video Fuels Talk of Legal Return and Purge in CHP

Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu’s latest video message on X, reported by Yetkin Report on 20 May 2026, has shaken Turkish political circles by hinting at a possible court‑ordered return to the Republican People’s Party (CHP) leadership and a subsequent “cleansing” of the current team around Özgür Özel and Ekrem İmamoğlu.

In his midday video, Kılıçdaroğlu framed his intervention as a call for “clean politics,” warning that allowing the CHP to be “contaminated” would amount to a betrayal of Atatürk’s legacy. He stressed that the party is an “ancient plane tree” that knows how to “purify itself” and conduct “inner reckoning” when necessary.

The video was quickly amplified within the party: 19 CHP MPs shared it in the first hours, a number that later rose to 22, underscoring that Kılıçdaroğlu still commands a visible faction inside the organisation. At the same time, social media reactions were largely critical, with many users posting harsh comments despite the show of parliamentary support.

Hint of “Butlan” and Leadership Purge

Behind the scenes, Ankara political circles link Kılıçdaroğlu’s timing to expectations around an appeals court review of the November 2023 congress in which he lost the leadership to Özel. According to these assessments, Kılıçdaroğlu and his close circle may believe the congress could be annulled (“mutlak butlan”) and that such a ruling might even come before the Bayram holiday starting on 26 May.

Analysts quoted by Yetkin Report interpret the video as a signal that, if the congress is voided and he returns to the helm by court decision, Kılıçdaroğlu would move to purge the current Özel leadership, which he sees as backed by Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu and his supporters. Such a scenario would open a new axis of internal conflict inside the CHP, potentially reshaping opposition politics ahead of future elections.

Özel’s Cautious Response

CHP leader Özgür Özel, speaking to Gazete Pencere, downplayed suggestions that he was personally targeted by Kılıçdaroğlu’s harsh words. Özel said he had never heard Kılıçdaroğlu say “I will come back by court decision” and that even if he did, he would not find such a stance fitting.

Instead, Özel argued that he would expect Kılıçdaroğlu to respond to debates over “butlan” by saying “What annulment? The rules on how a CHP leader is elected are clear,” which he described as the “clear stance” he would like to see. He also said he would be surprised if Kılıçdaroğlu took offence at his earlier criticism of those “seeking help from the Palace,” referring to the presidential palace.

Stakes for Erdoğan and the Next Elections

If Kılıçdaroğlu does return through a judicial decision and launches a cleansing of the current team, observers believe this would almost certainly ignite a new internal power struggle in the CHP. Such a clash could, in turn, strengthen President Tayyip Erdoğan and the ruling AKP in upcoming elections by weakening the main opposition’s cohesion.

However, Yetkin Report also notes that one should not underestimate the backlash such a maneuver could provoke among CHP voters and the wider opposition electorate. A perception that the opposition’s main party is being reshaped via court decisions rather than internal democratic processes could carry serious political costs.

“Sacred Trust” and “Bay Kemal’s Moral Struggle”

In his video, Kılıçdaroğlu repeatedly framed CHP as a moral project rather than just a political organisation, addressing “dear friends, brave companions and the conscientious noble citizens of this beautiful country.” He said a nation’s future is shaped by the “mind, conscience and morality” of politics, and that “the halal tables of the nation are blessed by clean politics.”

He warned that “dirty politics first rots conscience, then destroys morality and finally sets its eyes on the bread of the people.” According to Kılıçdaroğlu, keeping politics clean and bringing “abundance” to the people’s table is an honourable duty for everyone in politics, but “first and foremost” for CHP members.

Atatürk’s Legacy and “Untouchable Spirit”

Kılıçdaroğlu portrayed CHP as more than a party, calling it the will of the nation to rise from poverty and oppression. He reminded viewers that the party had faced coups, closures and pressure but “never bowed its head, was never subdued, never made to kneel.”

He described CHP as a “spirit” whose founder is “the great leader Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk” and said “there can be no betrayal of spirituality.” In this framework, he argued, CHP is not a simple inheritance left to today’s cadres but a “sacred trust” that cannot be “contaminated” or have “mud thrown on it.”

Call for Purification and Inner Reckoning

Returning to his metaphor of the “ancient plane tree,” Kılıçdaroğlu declared that the party’s shade can never become a refuge for “illicit gain and contamination.” When necessary, he said, CHP knows how to “purify itself” and “conduct its inner accounting.”

He urged party members not to allow their minds to be led astray by their egos, to stay on the path of honesty and to let their conscience be their guide. He concluded by reminding viewers that “Bay Kemal” has devoted more than 70 years to the people’s struggle for justice and that the only legacy he will leave his children is the “moral struggle” he has waged.
