Two Students Stabbed in Esenyurt
Turkey’s schools have been shaken by another outbreak of violence, this time in Istanbul’s Esenyurt district, where two teenagers were stabbed during a fight between students on Wednesday.
The incident comes barely a day after a far deadlier attack at a school elsewhere in Istanbul, adding to a disturbing succession of shootings, stabbings and violent confrontations involving young people that The Levant Files has been following in recent months.
According to Yeni Şafak, citing DHA, Wednesday’s violence erupted at a high school in the Barbaros Hayrettin Paşa neighbourhood of Esenyurt following an argument among students in the same class.
The dispute escalated into a fight in which a 16-year-old student allegedly stabbed two schoolmates, aged 15 and 14. Emergency teams were called to the school and the injured teenagers were taken to hospital. The 16-year-old suspect was detained, while authorities opened an investigation.
A Disturbing Sequence
Seen in isolation, Esenyurt might appear to be another school fight that spiralled dangerously out of control. Seen against the events of recent weeks, however, it becomes part of a much more troubling picture.
Only a day earlier, a 15-year-old attacked pupils at Şeyh Şamil Imam Hatip Secondary School in Istanbul’s Başakşehir district. Eight children were stabbed and one later died.
That attack itself followed September’s violence in Turgutlu, Manisa, where a 15-year-old student opened fire outside his high school. Associated Press reported that at least 11 people were wounded. Earlier deadly school shootings had already pushed Turkish authorities to introduce tighter security measures for the new academic year.
The incidents differ in motive, circumstances and severity, and there is no evidence that they are directly connected. Yet their frequency is increasingly difficult to dismiss. The latest bloodshed in Esenyurt adds another case to a question now hanging over Turkey’s education system: why are knives and guns appearing with such alarming regularity in and around its schools?
