An urgent editorial warning from The Levant Files
By the Editorial Team of TLF
20 October 2026

Tonight we call on the people of the Levant and the international community to speak out before another escalation puts diplomacy out of reach. Support the mediators. Demand restraint from Washington and Tel Aviv. Use every peaceful means available to oppose a wider war.
There is still something to protect.
On Tuesday evening, The Levant Files reported two developments that pulled the region in opposite directions. According to sources cited in our coverage, Qatar and Pakistan were continuing to mediate between Washington and Tehran. The same day brought an alarming report from Israel: Benjamin Netanyahu was again invoking the overthrow of the Iranian regime.
We cannot know how much of this rhetoric is aimed at voters. Electoral calculation may explain some of it. It does not make it harmless.
With Israeli elections and the American midterms approaching, the temptation to turn a military confrontation into a domestic political weapon needs close scrutiny. Netanyahu has made threats familiar through years of confrontation across the region. That familiarity is itself a risk. It can lead us to treat words with potentially catastrophic consequences as another evening’s political theatre.
Around Hormuz and in the war in Yemen, one miscalculation could have consequences far beyond the leaders who make it. People already living under bombardment, displacement and fear would pay first. Others would follow, in a region whose wars have repeatedly crossed borders and reached lives thousands of miles away.
That is why TLF is issuing this warning tonight.
We urge people across the Levant to organise peacefully, press their representatives and demand that their governments support mediation. Trade unions, journalists and civic organisations have a responsibility to make that demand heard. Those inspired by young Europeans taking to the streets should bring the same determination to the defence of peace: without violence, and without surrendering their independence to any government.
Our opposition to war gives Iran’s rulers no absolution.
TLF condemned the repression and bloodshed on Iran’s streets in January. Our commitment remains with the people subjected to that repression, with workers, and with those demanding dignity and basic freedoms. Their right to decide their country’s future belongs to them. No foreign government has a licence to decide it through bombardment.
We therefore oppose the pursuit of further war by the governments in Washington and Tel Aviv. Every credible diplomatic effort deserves room to work, including the mediation described in tonight’s coverage. Leaders must be pressed to engage before threats become orders and another opportunity is lost.
We have lived through enough to recognise the danger.
The US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003 and NATO’s intervention in Libya in 2011 left consequences that outlasted the campaigns. Syria’s devastation followed a different course, shaped by domestic repression, civil war and competing foreign interventions. These histories cannot honestly be reduced to one story. Each gives reason to question promises that outside military force will deliver a better political future.
For Yazidi women who survived Islamic State captivity, the human cost of the region’s collapse needs no editorial embellishment. Nor do Syrians who lost their homes, or Iraqis who spent years searching for missing relatives. Their suffering should weigh on every discussion of another war.
Tonight a diplomatic opening is being reported. It may be fragile. Give it every chance.
Stop this madness now.
Support mediation. Raise your voices peacefully, before another decision condemns more families to bury their dead.
